MSK innovation at Batı Kipaş Kağıt in Turkey

 

It is state-of-the-art end-of-line technology from MSK that the Turkish manufacturer of flat paper and cardboard, Batı Kipaş Kağıt in Söke, uses for packaging. The MSK Flowtech/Corritech packaging system is pioneering in terms of ease of maintenance, operation, and sustainability. 

Pioneering technology

With an annual production capacity of 730,000 tons of paper, the Batı Kipaş Kağıt mill on the west coast of Turkey is one of the largest paper and cardboard producers in Europe. With a packaging capacity of up to 80 pallets per hour, the installed MSK packaging line was designed for the production output of a total of eight sheeters. By using the new, patent-pending MSK electroshrink system MSK Corritech with eCovershrink, the packaging line is particularly sustainable and makes its contribution to climate-neutral production. “Cardboard is a breathable product. The shrinking process was needed to prevent the sized products from coming into contact with air, to protect the product from external factors and to give the product a beautiful appearance”, Mr. Erhan Özaydin, Sizing Manager at Batı Kipaş Kağıt, explains with regard to Kipaş' specific requirements for the packaging of its products. He adds: “What convinced us to buy an MSK system was, that they had good references.”

Fully automated and data-networked system

The entire MSK packaging line is controlled and visualized by the MSK EMSY software. The scale, sheet counter/marker, and labeler are fully integrated. In addition, the MSK EMSY forms a standardized interface to the MES system. The MSK packaging line consists of a four-sided load-centering system, which first aligns the paper stack centrally on its carrier pallet. At the same time, the pallet dimensions are recorded and communicated to the MES system together with the measurement data from the scales and sheet counter. After a label has been applied by the labeling robot, the film wrapping takes place.

Efficient and sustainable shrink packaging 

With the MSK Flowtech film sleeving system, Batı Kipas Kağıt has opted for one of the most user-friendly and easy-to-maintain packaging solutions on the market. First, a film cover sheet is placed on the top of the load. This is followed by film sleeving. A film curtain that matches the load height of the pallet automatically moves into the wrapping process. Thanks to MSK technology, only the film curtain itself is moved, while the film rolls, which can hold up to 1,000 kg, remain in their horizontal position. This makes format changeover very fast, easy to maintain via timing belt drives, and completely free from hydraulics. A patented film folding system ensures that the upper film overhang is applied to the top of the pallet load already during the wrapping process.

The subsequent shrinking process of the film takes place in a targeted and gentle manner using warm air. The new MSK Corritech electroshrink system with eCovershrink ensures maximum energy efficiency through heat recovery. This process, together with gentle shrinking with a product-specific hot air flow, enables the thinnest films to be used. After the shrinking process, a shrink press seals both layers of film on the top of the pallet for optimum storage, stacking, and transportation. 

Pallet conveying technology to the warehouse

Plastic belt conveyors, roller conveyors, and a pallet lift that can be operated from both sides are integrated into the packaging line and operate as a fully automatic pallet transport system over two levels. The MSK EMSY software, which is networked with the customer system, reports pallet positions and data to the MES system and enables seamless information tracking right through to when it is taken off by the forklift in the warehouse area.
The entire packaging line, including all conveyor elements, was planned, designed, and produced in-house by MSK. “The technical implementation and project management by MSK were very successful”, reports Mr. Erhan Özaydin.
